Periosteum covers the outer surface of all bones, with exception of those surfaces which are essential to arthroplasty. It is a mediator of osseous vascularisation as well as of attachment of muscular tendons and ligaments to bone surfaces and of nociception. Periosteum is made up of stratum fibrosum and stratum osteogenicum (cambrium) and is in many ways involved in processes of growth and regeneration. Being precursor cells with osteogenic and chondrogenic potentials, periost cells may be used in tissue engineering for differentiation studies and for biocompatibility tests.
